SUMMARY:IAS Public Talk - Kuiper Belts around other stars
DESCRIPTION:For our April talk\, the Society is delighted to welcome Dr Tim Pearce\, who will present “Kuiper Belts Around Other Stars” at 7:30pm on Monday 27th April. This talk explores what Kuiper Belt-like structures around other stars look like\, how they evolve\, and what they reveal about hidden exoplanets. It will take place at our usual venue in Beech Hill\, UCD\, Eircode D04 P7W1. \nThe talk will also be available via Webinar. Please join by clicking this NEW link a few minutes before the start time. \nTalk Description \nOur Solar System contains more than just planets. It also hosts vast populations of smaller bodies like asteroids and comets. These concentrate in structures such as the Asteroid Belt and Kuiper Belt. We can now observe similar Kuiper Belt-like structures around other stars too. They display a remarkable range of shapes and features. Astronomers believe unseen exoplanets cause many of these features. \nTim will give a broad overview of these distant Kuiper Belts. He will cover what they look like\, how they evolve\, and what they teach us about exoplanets and planetary systems. Tim assumes no prior knowledge and aims to make the topic enjoyable for everyone. \nAbout the Speaker \nTim Pearce is a Stephen Hawking Fellow at the University of Warwick\, UK. This summer\, he will join Trinity College Dublin as an Assistant Professor. His research centres on ‘debris discs’ — populations of asteroids\, comets and dust orbiting other stars. These resemble our own Asteroid Belt and Kuiper Belt. \nHe focuses on how these structures interact with exoplanets. Their shapes and features can reveal hidden planets that we cannot yet directly observe. His work is primarily theoretical\, but he also plays an active role in observations. He uses some of the most powerful instruments in modern astronomy\, including the James Webb Space Telescope\, ALMA\, and the VLTI. \nTim’s path to astrophysics was anything but conventional. After completing a Master’s at Durham and a PhD at Cambridge\, he left academia. He served as an officer in the Royal Navy\, specialising in engineering aboard nuclear submarines. He then became Lead Mathematical Developer at a leading traffic-modelling company. He returned to research in late 2019 as a postdoctoral researcher in Jena\, Germany. He joined Warwick in November 2023 as a Prize Fellow and received a prestigious Stephen Hawking Fellowship in May 2024. \n  \nLinks \nWebinar: https://ucd-ie.zoom.us/j/68968292191?pwd=Sx4cYTtXOkjtFjkBO1knZs5B7lD6Gh.1 \nThis Event: https://irishastrosoc.ie/event/kuiper-belts-around-other-stars/ \nPrevious IAS talks: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF-D1wyYOy3HINp0THSBOAdpoqcTKfE1Y \n

SUMMARY:IAS Public Skywatching - Geminids from Howth
DESCRIPTION:Cancelled due to bad weather unfortunately!\n\nJoin Us for a Night Under the Geminids!\nAs part of our free public events programme\, the Irish Astronomical Society (IAS) is thrilled to invite you to a Skywatching Evening at the Howth Summit Car Park on Sunday\, 14th December\, at 8pm.\nWe’ll be watching the Geminid meteor shower\, plus spotting stars and planets through modern telescopes — all free to enjoy! Chat with experienced amateur astronomers and learn something new — or just relax and gaze at the cosmos. \nDon’t forget your iPhone — grab a photo with the night sky (if you can! and bring a blanket\, a warm drink\, and your curiosity — we’ll take care of the rest. \n  \nThe origin of the Geminids\nThe Geminid meteor shower in December are one of the most reliable of the year and are associated with the asteroid 3200 Phaethon\, found in 1983. Phaeton is an odd asteroid\, just 6 kilometres across. It’s not icy\, but it has been seen with a dusty tail\, leading some to refer to it as a dusty comet. Phaeton’s orbit takes it within 0.14 AU of the Sun\, where its surface is baked like a dry lake bed\, causing a trail of dust. Astronomers have assumed that the Geminid dust trail formed gradually as dust accumulated with each of Phaeton’s orbits\, following the cometary process. But a new study finds this isn’t the case. Instead the team found the Geminids appeared rapidly. They used data from the Parker Solar Probe\, which measured the size and composition of Geminid dust particles as well as their relative speed and direction.\nThe best model from the analysis implies that the origin of the Geminids was not slow and steady\, but rather due to an impact event where Phaeton was struck by a smaller asteroid. While it addresses one of the problems with the “dusty comet” model\, it only suggests an impact event as one scenario. \n  \n⚠️ Weather Notice: This event is weather-dependent. If it’s cloudy\, we’ll have to cancel. Please check our website or Facebook page for updates. If we cancel\, we may reschedule for another night within a few days — so keep an eye out!

SUMMARY:IAS Public talk - Rings of Promise: Exploring Planet-Forming Discs
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nOne of the open questions in modern day astronomy is how do planets like our own form.  A key component in answering this is to better understand the natal environments of the planets that we see\, protoplanetary discs. At the centre of these vast discs of gas and dust\, that can extend up to hundreds of AU in radius\, is a still evolving central star. The ways in which the physics of these star and discs interact with one another and evolve is a highly active and complex area of research with important implications for our theories of planet and star formation. In this talk I will give an introduction into the topic of protoplanetary discs and describe my research in the field as part of my PhD in University College Dublin (UCD). I will also talk about the end of the successful story of EIRSAT-1\, Ireland’s first satellite\, of which I was a part of. \n  \nBio\nHi! My name is Aaron Empey\, I am a final year PhD student in star formation group at University College Dublin (UCD). My story started the same as many others with a fascination of looking up at the stars as a child and wondering what was going on behind it all. I went on to study a bachelor’s degree in Physics with Astronomy and Space Science in UCD which I graduated from in 2022. Following on from this\, I began the 4 year journey of a PhD in the area of star formation\, but with a focus on the protoplanetary discs and studying their properties using data mainly from the European Southern Observatory (ESO)’s Very Large Telescope (VLT). I am now at the final stage of my PhD journey and am looking forward to discussing the topic of protoplanetary discs with you all\, why I think they are interesting and some of the work I have done in the field.  \nDuring my time in UCD I have also been fortunate enough to be a part of the EIRSAT-1 team\, Ireland’s first satellite. I was involved with the day to day operations EIRSAT-1 while still in orbit. Having recently de-orbited I will also briefly talk about the story of this successful project and its end of mission. \n

SUMMARY:IAS Public Talk: How the James Webb Space Telescope is changing our understanding of the Universe
DESCRIPTION:Our October’s public talk  is on Monday 20th October at 7:30pm in the Beech Hill building in UCD.  Professor Tom Ray\, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies\, will give a talk titled\n“How the James Webb Space Telescope is changing our understanding of the Universe”. Tom has given us many entertaining and informative talks previously and we are delighted to welcome him back for this lecture. \n  \n \nSource: ESA \nAbstract\nSince the James Webb Space Telescope has started operating it has challenged and enriched our understanding of how fast the Universe is expanding\, how galaxies emerge earlier than we thought\, and the diverse composition of planet forming disks. In this talk I will explain many of these exciting discoveries and the new synergies between the Webb and cutting edge ground based telescopes. \n  \nBio\nProf. Tom Ray received his primary degree in Theoretical Physics from Trinity College Dublin in 1978\, followed by an MSc and PhD from the University of Manchester while carrying out research in Radio Astronomy at Jodrell Bank. He subsequently became a research fellow at the University of Sussex\, an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg and then returned to Ireland as a Lecturer in University College Dublin. He became one of the youngest professors in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in 1986. His main research interests are in star and planet formation and\, in particular\, the supersonic jets that stars like our sun produce when less than a million years old as well as the disks that surround such stars. \nTom is Co-Principal Investigator of the Mid-Infrared Instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). JWST\, which is due for launch in 2021\, will be the largest telescope ever placed in space. He is Co-Principal Investigator on ARIEL\, a mission selected by ESA\, to explore exoplanet atmospheres and also leads a group in DIAS developing optical/near-infrared Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) for use in Astronomy. He is an ERC Advanced Grant Laureate and his other interests include ancient astronomical sites\, like Newgrange\, and Historical Astronomy

SUMMARY:IAS Public Talk: Die Hard Astro – the Human Drive to Unravel the Universe
DESCRIPTION:Our first public talk of the season is on Monday 29th September at 7:30pm in the Beech Hill building in UCD.  We have a very interesting presentation on the night. We are pleased to introduce documentary filmmaker Seán Ó Cearrúlláin to present a screening of a new documentary on the amateur astronomers of Ireland (see details below). All are welcome.  Hope to see you there!\n\n\n\n\n\nDescription: \nThis documentary film puts a face to the astronomers of Ireland who continue to pursue their passion for the cosmos despite myriad challenges they must overcome daily to catch a glimpse of the night sky.  They show that the passion of exploring and learning about the cosmos is not just for a select few\, but rather\, astronomy is for anyone willing to take the time to “look up”… \nHe says “Most astronomy documentaries are all about “space” and what’s up there\, very few if any\, put a face to the people doing astronomy\, telling the story of their “why” and the “struggles” they face and overcome” \nSean is delighted to present his latest documentary for screening to the IAS on 29th of September and looks forward to taking any questions in a short Q&A after screening. This film is a Pilot to seed the funding needed for create a future documentary that will explore and bring to life the history and accomplishments of Irish astronomy dating back centuries\, all support and feedback very welcome so a better presentation for funding can be made to Screen Ireland\, the BFI and Swedish & Norwegian Film Institutes. \nBio: \nSeán Ó Cearrúlláin MSc BSc PMP is a documentary filmmaker with numerous awards and accomplishments behind him\, as well as being a passionate amateur astronomer. \n\n
