IAS Public Event – Summer Solstice Solar Viewing at the National Botanic Gardens

The Irish Astronomical Society is delighted to celebrate the 2026 Summer Solstice with a free public outreach event at the beautiful National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, on Sunday, 21st June, from 11:00am to 2:00pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity for families, curious minds, and anyone with an interest in astronomy or the natural world to come along, explore the science of our nearest star, and mark the longest day of the year in fitting style.

Experience the Sun Safely

Weather permitting, visitors will have the opportunity to:

• Observe the Sun through specially adapted safe solar telescopes operated by our members
• See surface detail on the Sun — from sunspots to solar granulation
• Explore hands-on science displays and demonstrations
• Learn about the science of the Sun and why the Summer Solstice marks such a significant moment in Earth’s annual journey around it

A limited number of free solar viewing glasses will be available on a first-come, first-served basis — so arrive early if you’d like a pair to take home!

This event is free and open to all. No booking required. Drop in any time between 11:00am and 2:00pm.

Whether you’re bringing young children for their first look at the Sun through a telescope, or you’re a seasoned stargazer curious about daytime astronomy, this event has something for everyone. The stunning surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens make it an ideal setting to combine a morning stroll with a little science.
