Formed in 1937, the IAS is the longest established astronomy society in Ireland.

The Irish Astronomical Society invites you to join us for a free public viewing event for the Partial Solar Eclipse of 12 August 2026, taking place at the Visitor Centre, Phoenix Park, Dublin.
This is one of the most significant astronomical events visible from Ireland in decades! Dublin will see approximately 94% of the Sun covered by the Moon, making the sky noticeably darken during the early evening. The last time Ireland saw comparable coverage was the 2015 and the 1999 solar eclipse.
📍 Location: Visitor Centre, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
🕕 Observations Begin: 18:15
🕗 Observations End: 20:15
Solar telescopes with certified filters will be on hand, and our members will be there to guide you through what you’re seeing.
This event is free and open to all, families and children are very welcome!
⚠️ Eye Safety — Important: A partial solar eclipse means the Sun is never fully covered. You must wear certified solar eclipse glasses at all times when looking at the Sun. Never look at the Sun with the naked eye or through any unfiltered optical device.
We look forward to sharing this incredible celestial event with you. Fingers crossed for clear skies over Dublin!
