Expand your horizons through observation and education
Formed in 1937, the IAS is the longest established astronomy society in Ireland.

For our September talk, the first of the 2026/27 season, the Society is delighted to hand the floor to its own members, who will present “In the Shadow of the Moon” at 7:30pm on Monday 28th September. Members who watched the solar eclipse of 12th August, from home and abroad, will share their experiences, along with a report from our partial Solar eclipse event at Phoenix Park. It will take place at our usual venue in Beech Hill, UCD, Eircode D04 P7W1.
The talk will also be available via Webinar. Please join by clicking this link a few minutes before the start time.
On 12th August the Moon covered about 94% of the Sun as seen from Dublin, with maximum shortly after seven in the evening and the Sun some 15° above the west-north-western horizon. One of the largest crowds in the country gathered with the Society at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre, where members ran solar equipment including telescopes with certified filters so people could watch it safely. Other members travelled abroad to experience the awe-inspiring totality, when the sun is 100% covered by the moon.
For this evening, rather than a single speaker, a few members will report on where they were and what they saw: from the Phoenix Park to those who travelled towards the path of totality as it crossed Greenland, Iceland and Spain. Expect imagery, reports, a few honest accounts of cloud, and time for questions afterwards.
